SKTI informed that it will increase its offshore oil blending business by four times, reaching from the current 23,000 barrels a day, to 90,000 barrels next year. The company charters a large oil tanker and adds semi-finished products to produce LSFO. What is more, SKTI also plans to retrofit scrubbers on 19 ships.

DNV GL published the revised 'Assessment of selected alternative fuels and technologies in shipping', to provide decision support for investments in ships, for the following five to ten-year period. In the report, DNV GL has identified LNG, LPG, methanol, biofuel and hydrogen as the most promising solutions.

During the 2019 Hellenic American Maritime Forum, Mr. Antonis Trakakis, Chief Technology Officer, FORWARD SHIPS, talked about LNG as a fuel. Namely, Mr. Trakakis stated that LNG provides the safest path towards a carbonless future, and there is no reason for the delay of its uptake.

Partners collaborated in order to remove the non-recyclable plastics from the North Sea and deliver it, after conversion, as a clean transportation fuel to the CIV Texel fishing fleet. The agreement stated that the participating fishermen will take all non-recyclable plastic waste from their fishing nets to shore.

Wärtsilä formed Wärtsilä Biogas Solutions, as Wärtsilä Puregas Solutions has merged with Wärtsilä’s biogas liquefaction team. The latter is a unit focusing on liquefying upgraded biogas for end-customer use. Wärtsilä’s biogas upgrading plants use its in-house Puregas CA technology, a process that recovers more than 99.9% of the biomethane present in raw biogas.

With exactly six months remaining for the implementation of the 2020 sulphur cap, IMO hosted a roundtable industry meeting at its London Headquarters on 21 June, where industry participants were updated on the latest guidance, treaty amendments and other instruments emanating from IMO to support the rule. 

ABS published a new Advisory on Gas and Other Low Flashpoint Fuels, providing guidance on available technologies, regulatory requirements and installation and operational considerations for adopting gas or other low flash point fuels.

The Greek Shipping Cooperation Council in London calls for urgent development of low carbon fuels in order for the industry to meet the planned greenhouse gas emissions. The Council supports that short-term measures as slow steaming need further knowledge and study, before they can be thought as viable solution. 

Vitol has began constructing a small oil refinery at its storage terminal in Malaysia, aiming to supply low-sulphur fuel for vessels. The project is expected to be completed in May 2020.  The project includes a crude distillation unit that can process 30,000 barrels per day of crude.

A new carbon neutral product, the first of its kind in the industry, is to be used by selected Maersk customers for their supply chain. The pilot project has been successfully tested in a trial, under the collaboration of the Dutch Sustainability Growth Coalition (DSGC), and Shell this year.
