South Korea has set path to establish a public-private training center aimed at educating 1,000 professionals annually in key areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), environmentally friendly ships and autonomous vessels.
On 20 March, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) officially opened a training center for maritime professionals at HD Hyundai Group’s Global Research Center (GRC).
Local news reports that the new training center is a collaborative effort between the South Korean government and shipbuilding companies to address the persistent shortage of skilled technical workers in the industry.
With a total investment of 6.4 billion won (around $4.77 million), of which 4.8 billion won (about $3.58 million) is government-funded, the center will offer training for approximately 1,000 current shipbuilders and university students specializing in relevant fields.
In addition, the program will focus on areas such as AI/big data, environmentally friendly ships, autonomous ships, and smart shipyards, based on the actual needs of shipbuilders.
As reported, the inauguration was attended by officials from MOTIE, the Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association (KOSHIPA), and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE).
