Bureau Veritas (BV) has partnered with Hanwha Ocean and Naftomar to develop vessels with an ammonia fuel prepared design.
The collaboration aims to advance decarbonization of shipping through innovative development of a vessel design optimized for ammonia fuel utilization. The project will work to help ensure a modern vessel design, to be engaged in the trade of green ammonia, can be safely built to operate with both LPG and ammonia as fuel.
BV will provide its technical expertise for the design review of VLAC and VLCC utilizing ammonia fuel; Hanwha Ocean will contribute its knowledge and experience in shipbuilding, and Naftomar will leverage its deep understanding of the ammonia supply chain and logistics.
The focus of the project will be on global safety aspects but specifically including the ammonia fuel supply system, leak detection, ammonia fuel containment and ammonia bunkering.
Dr. John Kokarakis, the Technology & Business Development Director at SEEBA Zone, Bureau Veritas, stated during the Posidonia exhibition to SAFETY4SEA that designing vessels should be based on risk assessments, which involve studying potential hazards and implementing mitigation strategies. He emphasized that this is of primary importance.
The joint development project (JDP) agreement was signed by Jong Seo Kim, President of Hanwha Ocean Co., Ltd, Talal Zein, Head of Trading of Naftomar Shipping and Trading Co., Ltd., and Matthieu de Tugny, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, at Posidonia 2024 in Athens, Greece.
