Shanghai, one of the world’s busiest ports, is aiming to transform itself into a hub for green shipping in response to tightening global emissions standards.
According to international news sources, the city’s government has set a target to supply over 1 million tons of low-carbon bunkering fuel annually by 2030. Shanghai’s strategy also includes leveraging its advancements in renewable energy, particularly wind power, as well as integrating carbon capture technology to produce green ammonia and methanol.
Furthermore, recently, the Los Angeles/Long Beach-Shanghai Green Shipping Corridor published their first ever annual progress report. The LA-LB-Shanghai Green Shipping Corridor is a partnership of C40 cities, ports, shipping companies and cargo owners convened to create a zero-emissions trans-Pacific trade route. The Corridor’s Implementation Plan Outline includes:
- Expanding shore power facilities at the Port of Shanghai, allowing ships to turn off engines while at berth.
- Enhancing clean energy refueling options at Shanghai’s port.
- Engaging fuel providers at LA/LB to support the green corridor.
