Kristian Hammer, Senior Consultant at DNV, has announced that October marked a record-breaking month for new orders of alternative fuelled vessels, with a total of 97 new orders added to DNV’s AFI platform.
According to Kristian Hammer, leading the charge is liquefied natural gas (LNG), which accounted for 66 of the new orders, with the container segment contributing 58 of those. Methanol also had a notable presence, with 29 new orders primarily from the bulker segment.
So far in 2024, a total of 464 orders for alternative fuelled vessels have been placed, reflecting a remarkable 46% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This figure has already surpassed the total number of orders recorded for all of 2023, which stood at 371.
In the first half of 2024, methanol dominated the landscape, capturing the largest share of new orders. However, the third quarter has shifted the spotlight to liquefied natural gas (LNG), which has made a notable resurgence. In Q3 alone, 105 new LNG orders were recorded, accounting for 64% of all alternative fuelled vessel orders for the quarter.
