Tankmatch and the Port of Rotterdam have announced the signing of the first continuous permit for the bunkering of methanol.
As explained, this follows a period during which methanol bunkering was carried out on a project basis, allowing both parties to assess its viability and safety. The new permit marks an important step in the adoption of methanol as a sustainable marine fuel.
The grant of the continuous permit is also significant due to the development of new safety protocols and operational procedures. In collaboration with the Port of Rotterdam, Tankmatch has worked on a joint plan for bunkering operations, setting a framework for future practices in methanol bunkering.
“We’re pleased to have reached this point with the Port of Rotterdam,” said a representative from Tankmatch. “Methanol is emerging as a more sustainable fuel option for the maritime industry, and this permit helps to ensure that operations are conducted safely and efficiently.”
The permit and the new operational plan lay the groundwork for the continued growth of methanol bunkering in the Port of Rotterdam, which could become a key location for this fuel type in the coming years.
To remind, in September, TankMatch and Evos formed a partnership to deliver methanol bunkering services across the Amsterdam–Rotterdam–Antwerp (ARA) region. Additionally, in 2023, GIDARA Energy announced that it has received the environmental permit for the bio-methanol plant to be built at Biopark, in the port of Amsterdam.
