The Port of Rotterdam continues to grow, following a record year in 2018 and a record quarter in 2019. According to the port, April was the best month for this year, as the port handled 13.6 million tonnes of container freight, on the contrary to the previous record – 13.2 million tonnes – that was achieved in August 2018.
The port highlights that April was the second-best month, handling 1.3 million TEUs and being slightly left behind of August 2018.
Today, the port plans to further expand in growth market as it has a sufficient available capacity at the deep-sea terminals. In addition, the port has efficient hinterland connections, based on its inland shipping, road and rail sectors. In April, the port partnered with Multimodal Coordination Foundation and Brabant Advice Centre (MCA Brabant) aiming to increase container transport via inland shipping between Rotterdam and North Brabant.

Moreover, the port has constructed a Container Exchange Route (CER), which links the deepsea container terminals, empty depots, rail terminals and distribution companies at Maasvlakte.
In the meantime, the port also operates efficiently due to its logistics solutions, such as Pronto, Navigate, Nextlogic, OnTrack, Box Insider and Deliver.
Concluding, the Port now operates smart Container42 which provides an insight into the challenges a container faces during its transport and logistics, and will play a role into the development of the ‘digital twin’ for the port; A digital representation of the physical port area.
