During 2024, the Port of Los Angeles processed more than 10.3 million container units, reflecting nearly 20% increase over 2023, and the second-best year in the 117-year history of the Port.
This milestone underscores its status as the busiest container port in the Western Hemisphere for 25 consecutive years. Additionally, environmental initiatives over more than two decades have reduced emissions of all kinds, with diesel particulate matter down 91% and sulfur oxides reduced by 98% since 2005, even with simultaneous cargo growth of 15% over that same period.
Other key performance-related achievements and initiatives included:
-
On-dock rail expansion: Completion of the $73 million Pier 400 On-Dock Rail Expansion project and ongoing expansion at Fenix Marine Pier 300 to boost rail transport efficiency.
-
Port optimizer platform: Enhancements to the digital platform, including a Universal Trucking Appointment System, now enable nearly 20,000 truckers to manage terminal appointments digitally, improving workflow and reducing delays.
-
Efficiency metrics: The Port emphasized that speeding container movement directly contributes to job creation, with every four containers moved equating to one job.
Port of Los Angeles Executive Director, Gene Seroka reiterated the commitment to leveraging data and technology to enhance port operations and called for ongoing collaboration to sustain performance improvements.
Our history at the Port of Los Angeles and the surrounding communities is more than just ships, containers and the old fishing industry. Our history is people.
