The Port of Amsterdam announced the establishment of a new four-year green strategy focusing on the development of non-fossil activities.
The Port of Amsterdam announced the new four-year strategy for 2025–2028 ‘On Track for a Future-Proof Port Complex’ in the context of its Green Port Amsterdam 2040 vision, focusing on transforming the port area, where the development of non-fossil activities will be combined with the reduction of fossil activities. The 2021-2024 period focused on the transition of the coal terminals, establishing and expanding new circular activities, and keeping the port accessible. This work will continue over the next four years.
Furthermore, as explained, the port will also focus on renewable energy sources, circular industries, and low-emission logistics.
Koen Overtoom, CEO of Port of Amsterdam, emphasized that by 2040, the port’s new contours will be clearly visible, with the necessary infrastructure in place to support the transition. This includes additional substations and electrical grids for electrification, as well as networks for hydrogen, steam, heat, CO2, and industrial water, all of which will be widely available.
Moreover, at the quays, permanent shore power facilities will be established, powered by green electricity from the sea. Additionally, there will be infrastructure for bunkering renewable fuels. Overtoom highlighted that thanks to digitalization, the planning of both sea and inland shipping has become more efficient too, leading to cleaner operations.
One of our goals is to stimulate the development of Green Energy Port Amsterdam by growing the transport of renewable liquids by 25 percent compared to 2024.
…said Koen Overtoom.
To remind, from 1 January 2025 the Port of Amsterdam has restricted the use of open-loop scrubbers in order to combat water and soil pollution.
