On 26 January the Russian-flagged nuclear-powered icebreaker 50 LET POBEDY collided with a freighter in the Kara Sea.
The collision resulted in causing significant damage to the icebreaker’s bow. The incident occurred while the icebreaker was assisting the freighter, which was trapped in ice.
The collision took place while navigating tight quarters, with the nuclear icebreaker making port-bow contact with the freighter’s port side near a cargo crane base, resulting in a substantial gash above the icebreaker’s waterline.
Russian media report that a Russian icebreaker 50 Years of Victory has collided with a dry cargo ship in the Kara Sea on January 26.
The icebreaker suffered damage to the left side hull, Russian media reported but promised everything was fine. See damage on second image.
