Seafarer welfare charity The Mission to Seafarers announced the launch of its new Onboard Mental Health Champions webinars and podcast series, as part of its WeCare programme, aiming to address the unique challenges they face onboard.
Separation from family, loneliness, lack of shore leave, fear of criminalization and the simple stress of everyday workload are only a few of the challenging factors for seafarers’ mental health, and even more in times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Mission’s Onboard Mental Health Champions webinar and podcast series intends to provide seafarers with practical tools designed to encourage positive mental health and wellbeing onboard, relating seafarers’ experiences of mental health and wellness, from both an officers’ and crew perspective.
Being able to provide immediate practical advice to the mental wellbeing crisis we are seeing across the entire shipping industry can make a real difference. Many of the problems at sea stem from the stigma attached to asking for help. We hope this new digital offering that provides practical advice will help reduce these barriers as well as improve onboard relationships and offer constructive support,

Seafarers’ happiness levels increased at 6.46 in the first quarter of 2021 from 6.37/10 in Q4 2020, according to the latest Seafarers Happiness Index report by The Mission to Seafarers, which however unveiled a mixed picture in terms of welfare standards and conditions for seafarers.
