Starting 2018, the Netherlands-based MF Shipping Group announced adoption of a proactive approach against plastic waste.
The company informed that it bought 750 design water bottles from the Plastic Bank, an organisation committed to stop ocean plastic, while improving lives.
By enabling the exchange of plastic for money, items or Blockchain secured digital tokens, the Plastic Bank empowers recycling ecosystems around the world and stops the flow of plastic into the oceans, while helping people living in poverty build better futures.
“A Christmas present for our seafarers, a present with a mission because each bottle sold supports The Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that turns plastic waste into currency, helping people in need escape extreme poverty and build better futures. We’re on a mission and although it is a drop in the ocean, doing nothing is not an option for us,” the Group said.
Earlier, the crew on board the ‘THhun Goliath’ managed in reducing the enormous amount of plastic water bottles, by receiving a BPA free food-grade stainless steel bottle together with water filters-sets.
To emphasize this idea the vessel’s Master Antoine Zuidema made a calculation as a example:
- 1 bottle a day per person
- 13 crew members on board
- per year 4,745 bottles (not counting all other bottles from olive oil, sunflower, ketchup, mayonnaise)
“We’re on a mission and although it is a drop in the ocean, doing nothing is not an option for us,” the Group said.
