A.P. Moller – Maersk has signed a long-term bio-methanol supply agreement with LONGi Green Energy Technology to support the decarbonization of its dual-fuel methanol container fleet.
According to the company, this partnership aligns with Maersk’s focus on bio- and e-methanol as viable alternative fuels for the shipping industry. The bio-methanol will be produced from straw and fruit tree cuttings at a facility in Xu Chang, China, beginning in 2026.
Maersk has put a lot of trust in alternative fuels to decarbonize its fleet. For instance, in January Maersk welcomed the word’s first methanol-enabled container vessel, Laura Mærsk. Additionally, Maersk and Hong Lam Marine successfully conducted the world’s first ship-to-containership methanol bunkering operation of a Maersk’s container vessel on 27 Jul 2023 at the Raffles Reserved Anchorage in Singapore.
Furthermore, With ECO Delivery, Maersk customers can manage ocean transports using certified green fuels like second-generation biofuel derived from waste feedstocks, a solution that many major companies have opted for.
