Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) announced a cooperation with Japan’s National Maritime Research Institute to start the research and development in the field of combustion of carbon-free fuel, as one of solutions for decarbonization.
Carbon-free fuel is a fuel that does not contain carbon atoms and thus does not emit CO2, therefore reducing GHG emissions as a countermeasure against global warming.
The scope of cooperation on carbon-free fuels includes solutions like hydrogen and ammonia, according to J-ENG.
Hydrogen energy is expected as a promising energy carrier for achieving a decarbonized society, and various studies are being conducted about the liquefied hydrogen and ammonia.
This move comes as part of the company’s commitment to decarbonization in line with IMO’s GHG strategy.
Earlier in 2019, J-ENG announced collaboration with NYK Line to begin research and development of biofuel.
