Iran has been placed in the White List of the International Maritime Organization in terms of the standard and maritime safety. Speaking about this development, Mohammad Rastad, PMO Managing director, said that the measures taken by the Ports and maritime Organization to maintain and improve maritime safety were key contributors.
Mohammad Rastad added that because of the fact that the waterways leading to the ports of the country need a safe depth of reception of ships, one of the measures leading to the promotion of maritime safety is the preparation of hydrographic maps of the ports’ waterways and dredging.
In addition, Iran established navigational assistance signs on the entrance of the ports and waterways under the responsibility of the organization.

Moreover, the Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development, pointed out that the creation of a fleet of maritime search and rescue is another measure taken to ensure maritime safety, while maritime search and rescue coordination centers are also necessary to plan and react to emergency situations at sea.
In order to maintain and enhance maritime safety, one of the duties of the officers of technical and safety inspection of the organization is to make sure that all the ships arriving into ports of Iran, comply with all the international safety standards. For this reason, all maritime training centres must be licensed by the Ports and Maritime Organization.
What is more, Iran’s maritime traffic control centres in all of its ports, operate and guide the ships and vessels safely within the port’s territory. In this regard, the Issue of certificates and licenses for the exploitation of vessels which are issued after certification of safety presented by port authorities is considered a crucial factor.
Finally, Mohammad Rastad highlighted that SOLAS is one of the most important conventions. Thus, Iran ‘has all the requirements for the implementation and promotion of maritime safety on its agenda’, Mr. Rastad added.
