A recent report surveyed 6,000 seafarers, asking them questions regarding the new technologies and digitalization. The seafarers were called to answer questions regarding digital transformation with regard to the shipping industry.
Namely, nowadays more and more seafarers have internet access. In fact, about 75% of seafarers are actually using internet while they are at sea. This is an increase of 32%, since the last time that the survey was conducted.

Moreover, according to the report, conducted by Futurenautics Maritime, 520,000 more seafarers have internet access while they are at sea today .
It is clear that a change of mindset is happening amongst modern seafarers, which is mainly caused by new technologies. The study’s key findings can be summarized as following:
- 92% said that Internet access strongly affects their decision on where to work.
- 95% consider connectivity as a positive effect on onboard safety.
- 69% reported that the increased use of big data and analytics, can positively affect their jobs in the future. 17% said that the see new technologies as a threat.
