Human Rights at Sea just issued its 6th annual report “Advancing human rights at sea internationally”, marking the charity’s actions between May 2019 to June 2020.
According to HRAS, this year has been perhaps the busiest year for the charity, focusing on expanding its human rights development work in the maritime environment around the globe.
In fact, the report marks the key highlights of the year, such as:
- The seafarers’ lack of PPE equipment onboard amid COVID-19.
- The Under-Funding of Seafarers’ Welfare Services and Poor MLC Compliance.
- The situation for migrants in Libya, which got worse due to the outbreak.
- The issue of stranded seafarers and the implications of COVID-19 lockdown measures.
- The Geneva Declaration, which aims to raise global awareness of the abuse of human rights at sea.
Each year we report that it has been busier than the previous year, that the scope and scale of our work has increased and most importantly, that the ‘human rights at sea’ narrative is growing internationally. 2021 and beyond are going to be exciting periods in our organisation’s development and already, we are planning the next report’s findings reflecting new investment, innovative work areas and new global partnerships.
