The Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission, also known as the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) recently joined Europe’s EMERGE project, which aims to reduce shipping emissions around the European marine waters.
For the records, HELCOM is one of the 18 participants which attended the project’s kick-off meeting in Laxenburg near Vienna, Austria during 24-26 February 2020.
EMERGE project goals to quantify and enhance emission reduction solutions for shipping in Europe, while develop effective strategies and measures to drop shipping industry’s environmental footprint.
Beyond producing data, the project will also develop several scenarios to help identify management options on how to best deal with all sorts of shipping emissions.
…said Joni Kaitaranta, the HELCOM data coordinator handling the project at HELCOM.
HELCOM from its side, will be responsible to work packages on hosting and publicizing spatial data outputs and participate in developing online tools for disseminating the outcomes and associated data to stakeholders, decision-makers and to the general public.
The 4-year EMERGE project, is funded by the European Commission and was formed in response to the Horizon 2020 action on ship emissions control scenarios.
Concluding, the project will analyze the complex interactions among technological options, pollutant emissions and dispersion, and environment and investigate how effectively available scrubbers reduce the effects of key pollutants.
