Greece’s first Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) near Alexandroupolis, recently welcomed its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo.
Last week, the GasLog Hong Kong, a 174,000-cbm LNG carrier chartered by TotalEnergies, arrived at the FSRU terminal in Greece. Prior to its arrival, the vessel had picked up the LNG cargo from Sempra’s Cameron LNG plant in Louisiana.
Do you know what FSRUs are?
Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRUs) are floating facilities designed to transport LNG to the shoreline. FSRUs employ technology akin to that used in onshore terminals. These structures offer advantages such as a faster development timeline and lower construction expenses.
The FSRU-based terminal is undergoing commissioning tests. The start of commercial operation depends on the trial operation’s duration.
The FSRU, converted from the GasLog Chelsea by Seatrium in Singapore, arrived in Alexandroupolis in December and completed mooring hook-up on December 23, 2023.
Once operational, the terminal will have a capacity of 5.5 billion cubic meters (Bcm) and provide natural gas to Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, North Macedonia, Serbia, Moldova, Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia.
Generally, LNG is rising in popularity as an alternative fuel. DNV Maritime’s Alternative Fuels for Shipping (AFI) database, noted a surge in orders for LNG fueled vessels in January with 10 vessels, and a new record for LNG-fueled ship deliveries.
