According to a recent update from Martin Christian Wold, Principal Consultant at DNV, January marked yet another robust month for alternative fuels in the shipping industry.
According to data added to DNV – Maritime’s Alternative Fuels for Shipping (AFI) database, a notable surge in orders for liquefied natural gas (LNG) fueled vessels was observed, adding 10 new entries during the month. Wold also highlighted the accelerating momentum of LNG bunkering, emphasizing a remarkable record for LNG-fueled ship deliveries in January.
Furthermore a total of 23 orders for methanol-fueled ships were recorded, predominantly concentrated in the container segment. This sustained growth suggests a rising demand for methanol as a viable alternative fuel source, reflecting the industry’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
The positive trajectory isn’t limited to LNG and methanol alone; Wold also reported ongoing momentum in ammonia adoption. Two additional orders for ammonia-fueled ships were documented, indicating a diversification of alternative fuel choices within the maritime landscape.
