DP World is launching a Carbon Inset Programme at its UK logistics hubs, London Gateway and Southampton, to help importers reduce their carbon emissions.
Beginning on January 1, 2025, this six-month trial will provide 50kg of independently certified carbon credits for every loaded import container moved through DP World’s terminals. Unlike traditional carbon offsets, which involve external projects such as tree planting, these credits represent direct emissions reductions achieved within the supply chain.
By providing easy access to an independently certified inset programme, we aim to create better awareness and encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices. By participating in the trial, a world first, import cargo owners can actively contribute to global decarbonisation efforts while aligning with their own sustainability goals.

The credits are generated by Unifeeder, a DP World subsidiary, which uses lower-carbon fuels across its Northern European shipping operations. These credits, verified and pooled, will be issued quarterly to importers participating in the programme. This approach offers a measurable method for reducing indirect (Scope 3) emissions linked to supply chain operations.
This initiative builds on DP World’s previous efforts to lower emissions, such as the Modal Shift Programme, which reduced emissions by over 17,000 tonnes in its first year. If half of the import volume at DP World’s UK terminals participates, the programme could replace over 11,000 tonnes of fossil fuel with lower-carbon marine fuels, reducing emissions by approximately 10,000 tonnes of CO₂.
Unifeeder’s role in the programme includes providing verified greenhouse gas reductions from its shipping operations. The programme aims to contribute to broader decarbonization efforts by integrating lower-carbon practices directly into supply chain logistics.
At Unifeeder, we are committed to using alternative fuels to decarbonise our logistics solutions. We are supporting DP World in the UK in their innovative Carbon Inset Programme by contributing verified GHG reductions generated on our vessels operating in Europe.
