SAFETY4SEA: How did it come about that you joined shipping industry and your field of expertise specifically?
Shaun White: With more than two decades of experience in the maritime industry, my journey began unexpectedly. Leaving school at 16, I embarked on a 4-year apprenticeship at a local engineering firm in my hometown, which specialized in pioneering diesel electric power and propulsion solutions for maritime vessels. It was during this time that I had the privilege to contribute to the development of the first UK navy fully electric propulsion systems, igniting my passion for electrical engineering and the maritime sector. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have received exceptional support throughout my early career, including sponsorship for further academic studies and the opportunity to work on thrilling and innovative maritime projects, which provided invaluable experience.
S4S: What about your current job/ role most excites you and why?
Sh.Wh.: Being the Managing Director of Foreship UK Ltd since its establishment in October 2022 is truly a dream come true for me. With the growing demand for independent consultancy in the United Kingdom, I am fortunate to work on a diverse range of projects, each presenting its own unique challenges. I greatly appreciate the time I get to spend with our customers, collaborating on ideas and developing projects that allow Foreship to deliver solutions to some of the most challenging and complex maritime problems. The maritime industry is currently undergoing significant changes, challenges, and opportunities, making it an incredibly exciting time to be in my role.
S4S: When you think of the word successful who’s the first person who comes to mind and why?
Sh.Wh.: Everyone has their own definition of success. Personally, I admire those who have achieved a harmonious work-life balance, as it is crucial for overall well-being. True success, in my opinion, is found in following a fulfilling path that brings happiness and motivates us to achieve our aspirations.
S4S: Who is/was the most influential person/mentor to you & why?
Sh.Wh.: Throughout my professional journey, I have been fortunate to collaborate with numerous influential colleagues in various maritime industries. These experiences have been invaluable, allowing me to learn and evolve under the guidance of experienced mentors who have greatly influenced my career. Among these remarkable individuals, one person who has consistently stood out is Bob Alton. I first encountered Bob when I was 18, and his unwavering belief in my abilities as an aspiring engineer ignited my passion for the maritime sector. This encounter set me on a path that has defined my career, and over the past 22 years, Bob has been a constant source of support and inspiration. His mentorship has played a pivotal role in shaping me into the professional I am today, and I am truly grateful for his guidance.
S4S: What is the best and what was the worst piece of advice you’ve ever been given and why?
Sh.Wh.: I can’t seem to recall any particular advice that stands out, whether it was good or bad. However, what I do recall is the valuable lesson I learned at a young age about the significance of integrity and resilience. It’s practical advice that encourages you to build your own unique identity based on your beliefs and core values, no matter what they may be.
S4S: What is the most worthwhile career investment (in energy, time, money) you’ve ever made?
Sh.Wh.: Opting for an apprenticeship at 16 instead of going straight to university proved to be a wise career move. Balancing study and work allowed me to gain both academic knowledge and practical skills simultaneously, a method I highly recommend for those inclined towards hands-on learning. In the middle of my career, I dedicated myself to further academic pursuits by pursuing university studies and obtaining professional chartered engineer status. This endeavour showcased my dedication to my profession and my unwavering commitment to continuous professional growth. As a husband and father of four young boys, I now channel a significant amount of time and effort into my family. Their steadfast support enables me to maintain my work responsibilities and travel extensively when necessary.
S4S: If you could give a piece of advice to your 18-year-old-self one thing, what would it be and why? What piece of advice should you ignore?
Sh.Wh.: My advice to my 18 year old self would be to continue on the journey you are on, continue to focus on what you are doing and take every opportunity that is coming your way.
S4S: In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your business life?
Sh.Wh.: Realizing that personal well-being is crucial for professional success has been a game-changer for me. I’ve come to understand that my health and happiness significantly impact my work performance. This awareness has motivated me to focus on achieving a better work-life balance by prioritizing self-care, establishing boundaries, and allowing myself time to recharge. By making these changes, I’ve noticed a positive shift in my energy levels, concentration, and creativity when it comes to my business pursuits. Taking care of myself has not only improved my overall well-being but has also enhanced my productivity and effectiveness in the workplace. It’s clear that investing in personal well-being is key to achieving success in my professional endeavours.
S4S: What would you like to change in the current maritime landscape and your area of expertise specifically and why?
Sh.Wh.: The maritime sector is currently experiencing a monumental shift, marking one of the most significant changes in recent history. This transition presents both challenges and opportunities for all involved. What I find particularly encouraging is the increasing trend of deep collaboration between companies and individuals within the industry. This collaborative effort is crucial in addressing the most pressing issue of our era – Climate change. Climate change is a worldwide challenge that requires a united front. It is imperative that we come together and work collectively across the entire maritime sector to innovate and develop sustainable shipping technologies for the future.
S4S: What is your personal motto?
Sh.Wh.: In my opinion, it is essential to treat others with the same respect and kindness that we expect for ourselves. Regardless of our positions or titles, we are all equal, and in the workplace, it is crucial to put our best efforts into everything we do.
