The US Coast Guard and partners are working to contain an oil spill on the Mississippi River. The oil spill was reported Wednesday between mile markers 95 and 96 in New Orleans. Fifteen hundred feet of boom has been deployed so far to contain the sheen.
A USCG Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew observed a sheen on the water during a routine overflight, in the afternoon hours of Wednesday.
Six oil spill response boats have headed to the scene along with Coast Guard shoreline assessment teams to assess and recover the product on the shoreline.
OMI Environmental Solutions has been contracted to contain and recover the product.
The Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator’s Office has joined the response effort.
The shoreline is projected to be minimally impacted and works are underway to minimize the impact.
The cause of this incident is under investigation.
