Earlier today a boat transporting refugees and migrants sank off Greece, resulting in approximately 80 people dead and many missing.
According to local news, the fishing vessel sank 47 nautical miles southwest of Pylos in international waters. The exact number of people onboard remains unknown but until now 104 have been salvaged. Unfortunately, none of the passengers onboard had any lifesaving equipment.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing with ships and aircraft from the Hellenic Coast Guard. Two patrol vessels, a navy frigate, seven ships, a naval helicopter, and an unmanned aerial vehicle are on the scene.
All those on board the fishing vessel are expected to be transferred to the port of Kalamata, where a reception has been organized in cooperation with the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.
The exact cause of the accident remains unknown as investigations are still ongoing.
