MacGregor received the 2025 GREEN4SEA Sustainability Award for the launch of its Carbon Calculator, designed to help container shipping companies estimate the CO2 emissions they can reduce by upgrading cargo systems on existing vessels. Reflecting Mac-Gregor’s commitment to sustainable shipping, the tool is available for free on the company’s website. Other short-listed nominees were: International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA), International Windship Association (IWSA), Maritime Battery Forum, UCL Energy Institute.
Accepting the award, Atte Virta, Naval Architect, Sales & Marketing, Customer Innovations, Cargo Stowage Solutions, MacGregor, said:
MacGregor Carbon Calculator is a commitment to a sustainable future for our planet. The calculator provides quick, reliable estimates of the benefits of an upgrade. It shows the expected percentage reduction in CO2 emissions per twenty-foot container and savings in fuel costs and ETS payments in dollars per twenty-foot container, as well as potential added revenue. This gives shipping companies a clear view of the environmental and financial benefits of upgrading, helping them see the real impact on their path to decarbonization.
MacGregor has launched its Carbon Calculator to help container shipping companies estimate CO2 reductions from upgrading cargo systems on existing vessels. Demonstrating MacGregor’s commitment to sustainable shipping, the tool is available free of charge on the company’s website. Maximizing cargo capacity not only boosts vessel earnings but also reduces fuel consumption per cargo tonnage carried, cutting greenhouse gas emissions and Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) costs. The MacGregor Carbon Calculator provides a simple, cost-free way for owners to assess the emissions-reducing potential of a cargo system upgrade. The tool estimates upgrade impacts based on user-entered operational details, including voyage specifics, the vessel’s existing cargo system, and its post-upgrade stowage capacity. It calculates approximate CO2 reduction per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), ETS savings, fuel cost reductions in USD per TEU, and additional revenue. By presenting clear environmental and financial benefits, the tool gives shipping companies full transparency on cargo system upgrades and their role in maritime decarbonization. Already trusted by several of the world’s top 10 container shipping companies, MacGregor’s Carbon Calculator serves as a first-step verification tool in their carbon-reduction efforts.

At Jotun, we believe innovation is key to cleaner operations, and our commitment to sustainability is embedded in everything we do. Underwater biofouling is often an overlooked issue, yet it is responsible for up to 20% of the industry’s total GHG emissions. Left unchecked, it increases fuel consumption, emissions, and the spread of invasive species. But with the right solutions, we can turn this challenge into an opportunity.
With nearly 100 years of experience navigating uncharted waters, Jotun remains committed to continuous innovation and the development of advanced products and solutions. A clean hull ensures cleaner operations; therefore, Jotun continuously develops solutions that enable its customers to optimize hull performance and reduce emissions. To support the shipping industry’s decarbonization efforts, Jotun has strategically evolved from a paint supplier to an expert partner in enhancing fleet efficiency. This shift—from selling paint to helping customers maximize hull performance through digitalization, advanced algorithms, and strict quality standards—has set a new industry benchmark. In 2022, Jotun partnered with 12 suppliers on Hurtigruten’s Sea Zero project, which aims to achieve zero-emission passenger and freight transport along the Norwegian coast by 2030. In 2018, SGS secured funding to conduct a feasibility study evaluating the benefits of installing its FastRig wingsail concept on a Panamax ship importing biomass into the UK. In 2024, SGS built the first-ever FastRig in Glasgow, Scotland. FastRig, a 100% recyclable, lightweight aluminum wingsail, is easily retrofittable and ‘intelligent’—autonomously positioning itself to capture the optimal wind. With support from the European Space Agency, SGS has developed FastRoute™, a wind-assisted weather routing app that quantifies the value of wind for any ship on any route. Diane has been a pioneer in the tech industry for more than 30 years. In the 1980s, she was part of the Cellnet team that brought the first UK cellular telephone system to market. She later worked in Formula One and offshore yacht racing in the late 1990s and early 2000s before transitioning into renewables, where she led B9 Shipping, part of the B9 Energy Group. Diane sits on the UK Department for Transport’s Clean Maritime Council and was a ‘Green Shipping Expert’ for the EU Waterborne Transport Platform. She was named a BBC ‘Woman of Power’ in 2020, received Innovate UK’s ‘Women in Innovation’ Award, and won the Holyrood Climate Award for Technology and Innovation in 2024.
