Nine major suppliers of biocides in the marine antifouling coatings sector have come together to highlight the critical role of marine biocides in preventing biofouling on ship hulls.
In their whitepaper, Antifouling Biocides: A Key Contributor to Sustainable Shipping, they discuss the history and development of antifouling coatings and emphasize the importance of biocides in controlling biofouling. The whitepaper stresses that without biocides, the global shipping industry would face significantly higher costs due to increased fuel consumption, greater greenhouse gas emissions, and risks to marine biosafety.
The suppliers also caution that further restrictions on marine biocides could hinder innovation and limit the ability of coatings manufacturers to address future biofouling challenges. While biofouling has been a persistent issue for the maritime industry, the use of biocidal antifouling coatings has effectively protected the global shipping fleet.
The Co-authoring companies of the whitepaper are: American Chemet Corporation, Arxarda AG, Bardyke Chemicals Ltd, Cosaco GmbH, ECKART GmbH, I-Tech AB, Janssen PMP, LANXESS AG and Nordox AS.
