CMA CGM has announced plans to launch a zero-emissions inland transport solution in Vietnam, featuring a 100% electric barge powered by renewable energy.
The barge will operate on a 180km route between Binh Duong Province and the Gemalink terminal in Cai Mep, reducing CO2 emissions by 778 tons annually. The barge will be recharged using electricity from a solar farm at the Gemalink terminal, which will produce 1 GWh of green electricity per year. It will transport over 50,000 TEUs annually and is expected to begin operations in 2026.
The project is part of CMA CGM’s efforts to decarbonize freight transport and align with Vietnam’s Net Zero by 2050 goals. NIKE has committed to using the e-barge for shipments between Binh Duong and Gemalink.
According to CMA CGM, the solar farm will also create local jobs and enhance Vietnam’s position in the renewable energy and sustainable logistics sectors. CMA CGM has been present in Vietnam since 1989, operating 5 offices and 29 weekly services.
