WTO members need to agree on an international deal to eliminate harmful fishing subsidies and help protect oceans and bounce them back, says Sir David Attenborough in a new video.
The film, produced by WWF in collaboration with Our Planet, Friends of Ocean Action, Silverback Films and the World Economic Forum, features Sir David Attenborough explaining how the continuing subsidies of governments keep vessels fishing even though there are no fish left in the ocean for it to be profitable.
Governments have been tasked with negotiating new global rules on fisheries subsidies by the end of this year. Previously, the World Trade Organization negotiated global rules for industry and agricultural subsidies, and now “we need to do the same for fishing”, the video highlights.
