Wärtsilä, an advanced maritime technologies company, has published a 360° experience video that shows the successful testing of its automated dock-to-dock solution. Up to now, the prototype has been tested with small vessels and ferries that travel short distances. Yet, the technology can be used for vessels that ‘repeatedly sail the same journey’, such as containers and tankers.
Specifically, on November 2018, in Norway, the Smart Docking System prototype was put through its paces as a vessel was controlled from one port to another.
The system controls a vessel from one port all the way to the next one. That consists from pulling away, to transiting across open water and pulling into the next dock.
During the voyage the vessel is tracked by CyScan sensors along the shore which measure its range and speed.
The vessel is going automatically from one port to the next without any human intervention, other than just pushing a button telling it to sail.
… stated Jann Mayer, GNC Development Engineer, Wartsila DP Group.
Concluding, the video provides a full picture of the vessel’s voyage. In order to see the automated system to its fullest extent and from every angle, press the arrows in the corner of the video.
