According to the United Nations and Boskalis, over a third of the crude oil successfully transferred from the FSO Safer supertanker off Yemen’s Red Sea coast.
To remind, carrying over 1.1 million barrels of oil, the supertanker FSO Safer was abandoned off Yemen’s Red Sea port of Hudaydah after the civil war broke out in the country in 2015.
As informed, the oil transfer operation started on 25 July, and is progressing well. The team from SMIT Salvage began the ship-to-ship transfer at the start of last week after months of preparation.
The first phase of the transfer has been completed, with with 360,000 barrels of oil.
According to reports, the operation needs two to three weeks to complete.
As explained, after the removal, a layer of thick oil will remain at the bottom of the tanks, which will removed with a mobile spray tank cleaning machine.
Furthermore, to other phases of the operation are planned.
