The Hellenic Coast Guard conducted a rescue operation on Wednesday, December 4, to evacuate 14 crewmembers from the Liberian-flagged general cargo “New Leo” as the vessel was seriously listing, posing great risk for the seafarers onboard.
According to the Hellenic CG the vessel was hard-to-sail due to the rough weather conditions, and became unmanned about 30nm northeast of Greek Skyros Island.
Thus, the Hellenic CG used Air Force Super Puma helicopters which departed from Chios and Lemnos islands and went to the rescue.
As seen in the video above, the vessel is swaying into the rough seas uncontrollably, followed by a mechanical failure and shifting of its cargo.
Following the rescue operation, the crew was transmitted to Skyros to a medical facility as some of the sailors needed medical treatment.
New Leo remains in the same position and there have been no reports of contamination from the vessel.
