A cement carrier ran aground on the west coast of Iceland on Saturday, November 3, because of the heavy waves and weather conditions. The crew and the pilot controlling the carrier were rescued by a helicopter.
According to reports the 1976-aged Fjordvik was supposed to head to the Port of Helguvik. The carrier had a maritime pilot on board, who tried to maneuver the carrier, missed the harbor and ended up to the rocky breakwater.
As far as the carrier is concerned, the MV Fjordvik has a deadweight of 4,117 tonnes, it is 94 meters in length and is registered in Bahamas.
Moreover, plenty of videos were published in social media showing the ship getting hit by heavy waves. The grounding of the ship had as a result the breach of the carrier’s hull and an oil spill. A helicopter rescued the pilot and the crew and evacuated them.
Finally, the weather is thought to be a major factor for the incident. However, the cause is still under investigation.
