Nawiliwili Port reopens but Port Allen in Kauai remains closed
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Captain of the Port reopened Nawiliwili Port on October 19, Sunday evening, but Port Allen in Kauai remains closed due to the severe weather of Tropical Storm Ana.
Vessels transiting within the vicinity should seek sheltered waters until storm conditions subside and the Captain of the Port has deemed the port safe to reopen.
Once the storm has passed and the threat of severe weather has subsided, the USCG and State of Hawaii will jointly conduct surveys for channel blockage and prioritize steps to resume essential, then normal, vessel traffic within the port. These steps are to minimize risk of damage to vessels and assess the conditions of channels, aids to navigation, waterfront facilities, piers and other infrastructure.
The COTP, in conjunction with the state DOT-Harbors in Hawaii, will begin sending Port Assessment Teams to accessible areas of the port as soon as it is safe to do so.
“I am committed to reopening the port as soon as it is safe to do so,” said Capt. Shannon Gilreath, the Coast Guard Captain of the Port. “Reconstitution of the port is essential to the flow of goods and services and necessary to repair and recovery efforts of our local communities.“
The conditions of the port will be evaluated and changed dependent on the assessment of the port.

Condition V: Seasonally readiness, 1 June – 30 November Condition IV: The ALERT condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 72 hours. Condition III: The READINESS condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 48 hours. Condition II: The WARNING condition in which winds above 34 knots (39 mph) are expected within 24 hours.
