The US Government issued a warning about the risk posed by pirates to boats and oil installations in the southern Gulf of Mexico.
According to Reuters, the US State Department informed that “Armed criminal groups have been known to target and rob commercial vessels, oil platforms, and offshore supply vessels in the Bay of Campeche area in the southern Gulf of Mexico.”
Although the risk remained the same, the warning came after a number of incedents were reported in recent months, such as an attack in November on an Italian flagged vessel off the state of Campeche.
According to US MARAD, the first three weeks of April 2020 have seen a high number of piracy attacks on offshore support vessels in the southern rim of the Gulf of Mexico.
