US and Portugal aim to increase liquefied natural gas (LNG) cooperation, that will contribute to a more sustainable shipping and ocean economy.
During bilateral discussions at the World LNG Summit, the US and Portuguese delegations highlighted progress made in the bilateral energy relationship that could bring lower energy prices, more jobs, enhancement of Europe’s energy security and emissions reduction from the shipping sector.
They namely agreed to continue energy and blue economy cooperation, including via energy discussions within the framework of the US Portugal Standing Bilateral Commission.
The Port of Sines received the first US LNG shipment to Europe in 2016 and has continued to be the number one European destination for US LNG.
The US Department of State and Portuguese Ministry of the Sea will continue to work together to help Europe diversify its energy supplies through new sources of natural gas, vital interconnectors, LNG maritime infrastructure and new facilities to import LNG, the US Embassy & Consulate in Portugal said.
