IMB Piracy Reporting Centre data
ICCInternational Maritime Bureau (IMB) has posted on its website updated data regarding the piracy and armed robbery figures as follows (updated on November 25):
Worldwide Incidents 2013: 234 reported incidents including 12 hijackings. Somali related incidents 2013: Thirteen reported incidents including two hijacking. Nigeria related incidents 2013: 30 reported incidents including two hijacking. |
The main aim of the IMB (Piracy Reporting Centre) PRC is to raise awareness within the shipping industry, which includes the shipmaster, ship-owner, insurance companies, traders, etc, of the areas of high risk associated with piratical attacks or specific ports and anchorages associated with armed robberies on board ships.
IMB gives the following general advice to Master transiting / calling at ports of piratical/ armed robbery:

3.Procedures given inBMP4 while transiting high risk areasof Somali piracy.
Last week, the IMB piracy reporting centre issued latest report for period January- September 2013 to reveal that piracy on the world’s seas is at its lowest third-quarter level since 2006, but to warns of the threat of continuing violent attacks off the East and West coasts of Africa.
