The Maritime and Coastguard agency examines all of fishermen’s training and certification regulations, as it aims to update the UK’s training and examination system for fishermen in order to boost their skills and also improve safety in seas.
Specifically, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency commented that the update may also include a ratification of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW – F).
Harry Deans, Maritime Coastguard Agency noted that they will collaborate with the shipping industry and with representatives from the Fishing Industry Safety Group (FISG).
Our goal is to update and modernise the UK’s training and examination system for fishermen in order to enhance skills and improve safety, while considering the needs of the industry and international regulations.
… Mr Deans added.
In the meantime, the Agency will also go to a public consultation during October-November, as they believe that the public’s feedback is crucial in reforming the fishing industry.
Concerning the STCW-F, during the 6th Session of IMO’s Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW 6), the Organization reviewed the STCW-F, highlighting that progress has been made in boosting safety in the fishing industry.
