The University of Strathclyde and Oldendorff Carriers are establishing a research center focused on sustainable shipping.
As informed, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by the two parties to collaborate on issues such as decarbonization, operational safety, and a just transition for the shipping industry. The planned Oldendorff Research Centre for Sustainable Shipping will focus on designing energy-efficient ships using innovative technologies and alternative energy sources, with a goal of achieving zero-emission operations.
The University of Strathclyde’s Executive Dean of Engineering & Associate Principal, Professor Stephen McArthur, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Oldendorff Carriers as the combination of Strathclyde’s research excellence and Oldendorff’s practical experience will undoubtedly bring exciting opportunities for the decarbonisation of shipping. “
In addition to ship design, the partnership will explore AI-supported data intelligence, digitalization, bio-inspired technologies, and human performance improvements at sea. It also aims to support the International Maritime Organisation’s net-zero goals.
Frustrated by the slow development of significant decarbonisation technologies, Oldendorff feels compelled to invest in academic research with the aim of moving the dry bulk industry forward.
