ClassNK has awarded the ‘ELW (HP)’ (Excellent Living and Working Environment – Hydroponics) notation to the bulk carrier ROYAL LAUREL, owned by Tokei Kaiun Ltd for its onboard vegetable grower.
A ccording to ClassNK, a key feature aboard ROYAL LAUREL is the ‘Hydroponic Vegetable Grower for Ship’ system, developed by HSN-KIKAI KOGYO CO., LTD. The system is specifically engineered to function in the challenging, inclined environments found aboard ships, ensuring reliable performance in maritime conditions.
This makes ROYAL LAUREL the first vessel in ClassNK’s registry to receive the ‘ELW (HP)’ distinction. The initiative aims to enhance working conditions beyond the minimum standards set by the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006), fostering a more attractive and supportive workplace environment.
The improvements are expected to reduce crew fatigue, contribute to better health, and enhance the safety and efficiency of operations at sea.
