A collision between a Philippine-flagged tugboat M/TUG Sadong 33 and a Panamanian-flagged vessel MV Universe Kiza occurred near Maasim, Sarangani Province, at around 4:20 AM on March 25, 2025, causing the loss of life of two.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the tugboat was towing LCT Sea Asia from Glan, Sarangani Province, to Iligan City when MV Universe Kiza passed between them, severing the towing rope and causing M/TUG Sadong 33 to capsize. As of 3 PM, LCT Sea Asia remained near the incident site, while MV Universe Kiza proceeded to General Santos City, where it will anchor and cooperate with the Maritime Casualty Investigation (MCI).
The Philippine Coast Guard deployed four floating assets with rescue divers and response teams to conduct search and rescue (SAR) operations. Six of the eight crew members aboard the tugboat were rescued and found to be in good condition after medical checkups. However, the bodies of the tugboat’s captain and oiler were recovered.
Initial environmental assessments showed no oil spill, but precautionary oil spill booms were placed as a safety measure.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan ordered coordination with Harbor Star Salvage Company for the tugboat’s recovery and directed legal officers to file appropriate charges against the master and crew of MV Universe Kiza. He also extended condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed the PCG’s commitment to maritime safety and environmental protection.
