On April 22, 2024, a ship collision occurred approximately 14 miles off Capo Passero on the southeastern tip of Sicily, near the ports of Syracuse and Catania.
In particular, the container ship EF OLIVIA, a 42,200 dwt vessel registered under Portugal, collided with the general cargo ship HAYRIYE ANA, an 8300 dwt Liberia-flagged vessel. Both ships incurred minor damages, with the container ship’s hull punctured midships at the waterline.
The Italian National Operation Center and the Italian Coast Guard promptly responded to the incident. The Guardia Costiera deployed an AW139 helicopter, an Atr42 aircraft, and a patrol vessel for rescue and environmental monitoring. Despite the collision, no pollution was reported at the site.
