On 23 October, a 200-meter-long freighter crashed into the embankment of the Kiel Canal near Neuwittenbek, Germany, due to low visibility.
The bulk carrier “Ultra Infinity,” which was en route from Immingham, England, to Riga, Latvia, did not suffer significant damage. There was no water ingress or leakage of operating fluids. Visibility at the time of the crash was less than 100 meters due to heavy fog, and the freighter, measuring around 200 meters in length, was navigating under challenging conditions.
Investigations by the Coast Guard suggest that the collision was likely caused by human error, as no technical defects have been found. A seaworthiness check will be carried out to determine if the ship can resume its journey safely.
Despite the accident, there was no major damage, and no environmental hazards were reported.
