GoodFuels Marine along with bulker and tanker owner and operator Norden A/S, has successfully completed trials of the world’s first zero emission, ‘drop in’ Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO).
The Bio-Fuel Oil (BFO) is able to deliver almost zero carbon and Sulphur Oxide (SOx) emissions without requiring engine modifications. The trials were performed on the 37,000 deadweight tonne (dwt) Handysize product tanker vessel Nord Hihglander, which was operating in the North and Baltic Seas.

The trials indicated the there is the possibility to future-proof fuel requirements for shipowners and operators who want an alternative to both distillates and Ultra Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (ULSFO) in order to comply with 2020 0.5% sulphur cap requirements.
Commenting on the results, Dirk Kronemeijer, CEO, GoodFuels Marine, noted that:
Bringing this to market now offers shipping a near-zero carbon and SOx alternative to HFO, and VLSFO – 0.5% blended fossil fuel
In addition, Jan Rindbo, CEO, Norden, added that the company has reduced its emissions by 25% between 2007 to 2017. However, ahead of the 2020 regulation, it wants an alternative solution, which it believes is the BFO.
