In its weekly report for 7-13 Apr 2020, ReCAAP ISC informed of one incident of armed robbery against ship in Asia. The incident involved the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Leyla K, while anchored off Johor, Malaysia, on 11 April.
While at anchor about 15 nm east of Tanjung Kelesa, the master of the tanker discovered the losses of a breathing apparatus air charging compressor and a M4 Weldon pump at about 1030 hrs.
The crew did not see the boarding of the perpetrators and there were no injuries.
Therefore, ReCAAP ISC classifies the incident as a CAT 4 incident.
Then, on 13 April, the Master informed ReCAAP Focal Point (Singapore) of the incident via email.
The Focal Point shared the information with the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the Singapore Police Coast Guard.
They also initiated a safety navigational broadcast, and notified Malaysian and Indonesian authorities.
Piracy and armed robbery is a regular phenomenon in Malaysian waters.
On 17 January, six gunmen dressed in black suits kidnapped eight crew men from a Malaysian-registered fishing trawler.
Malaysian authorities recovered three of the missing crew in the vicinity of Lahad Datu, Sabah, next day.
