USCG families are paid back after government shutdown

USCG members are receiving money back, concerning their pay for January 15 paycheck, which went unpaid due to 35-day government shutdown. The payment began because of an agreement between President Donald Trump and the leaders of the House and Senate and the federal government has been funded through February 15. As a result, USCG families are provided with two additional pay periods in case of another shutdown.

Ensuring commercial vessel safety during suspension of USCG activities

Due to the lack of enacted appropriation or continuing resolution, the US Coast Guard is required to execute an orderly suspension of some operations and activities. USCG will continue operations authorized by law that provide for national security, or that protect life and property. However, some administrative functions will be limited. The following guidance aims to help vessel owners, operators, and other affected parties during the lapse in appropriations.

US MARAD advises on maritime piracy

US Maritime Administration (MARAD) noted that in 2018 there were 18 reports concerning boardings, attempted boardings, attacks, hijackings, and kidnappings in the Sulu and Celebes Seas. The recent kidnappings in the area, were linked to the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), an, allegedly, violent Islamic separatist group operating in the southern Philippines.
