The National Maritime Centre (NMC) announced on January 28 that it has re-opened and that applies measures to highlight the increased levels of application inventory. NMC is working to minimize the negative impact to the maritime industry and will publish additional information regarding furlough recovery operations as needed. 

USCG members are receiving money back, concerning their pay for January 15 paycheck, which went unpaid due to 35-day government shutdown. The payment began because of an agreement between President Donald Trump and the leaders of the House and Senate and the federal government has been funded through February 15. As a result, USCG families are provided with two additional pay periods in case of another shutdown.  

The US Coast Guard is searching for an overdue aircraft with three people aboard about 20 miles west of Kake, Alaska. Namely, a Guardian King Air 200 medical life flight was expected to land in Kake, however, the aircraft never landed. What is more, the USCG informed that it found debris from a plane in the water approximately 22 miles west of Kake.

The US Coast Guard has started an investigation on the death of Coast Guard member assigned to the Cutter 'Douglas Munro', who was found unresponsive and later declared deceased Sunday morning in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mellon (WHEC 717) continue their South Pacific patrol in support of counter-Illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing and global security missions. Mellon’s crew is helping the Commission enforce its regulations on the tuna fishing industry, a $5 billion per year fishery that is essential to economies in the South Pacific.

The Miami Beach Coast Guard rescued four seafarers on January 26, from a vessel taking on water about 1 mile east of Cutler Bay. The Coast Guard Station Miami Beach 45-foot Response Boat- Medium boat crew spotted the four marines and immediately went for help.

The US Coast Guard suspended the search for a missing Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas cruise ship crewmember 37 miles east of Hillsboro Inlet. Namely, a crewmember from the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas cruise ship had gone overboard. Crews searched for approximately 24 hours covering 1,388 square miles.

Due to the lack of enacted appropriation or continuing resolution, the US Coast Guard is required to execute an orderly suspension of some operations and activities. USCG will continue operations authorized by law that provide for national security, or that protect life and property. However, some administrative functions will be limited. The following guidance aims to help vessel owners, operators, and other affected parties during the lapse in appropriations.

US Maritime Administration (MARAD) noted that in 2018 there were 18 reports concerning boardings, attempted boardings, attacks, hijackings, and kidnappings in the Sulu and Celebes Seas. The recent kidnappings in the area, were linked to the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), an, allegedly, violent Islamic separatist group operating in the southern Philippines. 

The US Coast Guard announced that it is searching from January 24, for an overboard crewmember from the Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas cruise ship. The crewmember went overboard 37 miles east of Hillsboro Inlet. The USCG deployed the cutter Paul Clark, a US Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, and an Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane.
