During the past two weeks, the US Coast Guard and Illinois Department of Natural Resources boarded 39 boats in the Chicago area, terminating the voyages of 22 vessels for conducting illegal charter operations on Lake Michigan and the Illinois River. 

The US Coast Guard issued a $5,000 fine to the owners of a foreign freight vessel, for unauthorized ballast water discharge into the Willamette River in Portland, after a routine port state control ballast water examination, on August 16.

JAX LNG announced that it received a Letter of Acceptance from the US Coast Guard for the operation of their waterfront LNG facility and the approval to conduct ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations with TOTE Maritime’s Marlin Class ships and the LNG barge, Clean Jacksonville.

The Republic of Marshall Islands issued a notice addressing the pre-arrival requirements and measures for improved compliance for vessels calling in US. This revision contains an updated Critical Items Checklist, new statistical information, and reflects the relevant provisions of the RMI’s current Recognized Organization Agreement.

The US Coast Guard issued a policy letter providing guidance on Subchapter M third party organizations (TPOs) under the Towing Safety Management.

Following a letter released in June, USCG further provides Captains of the Ports with  guidance considering safety issues associated with SIMOPS (Simultaneous Operations) in conjunction with LNG fuel transfer operations. The new notice includes guidance on an optional, formal operational risk assessment, if the vessel operator chooses to conduct one.

Ecochlor is the fifth company acquiring USCG Type Approval for its BWMS. The other four manufacturers are: Optimarin, Alfa Laval, OceanSaver and SunRui.

The US Coast Guard Research and Development Center in New London, Connecticut, is currently studying how the use of 3-D printing technology might improve mission readiness through logistical support, as the availability of spare parts can be important to mission completion.

Recent inquiries by US Coast Guard Marine Inspectors indicated that a large number of vessel operators and ship masters continue to rely on outdated high seas communications frequencies when communicating with the US Coast Guard.
