According to a new internal review that was conducted by Navy secretary, Richard Spencer, the US Navy R&D ecosystem is 'under cyber siege' by hackers. The results of the review concluded that the Navy's digital secrets have been so thoroughly plundered by Chinese infiltrators that the service doesn't even know what or how much it has lost.

On March 8, the crew of the US Navy destroyer USS James E. Williams helped rescue 26 people from a vessel in distress 48 miles southeast of Long Key attempting to illegally enter the United States. The US Coast Guard received a notification from a good Samaritan boat reporting for a 30-foot disabled wooden sail vessel with passengers waiving for help.

Concerning its FY2020 budget, the US Navy proposed to include a $10 billion top line increase, in comparison to the proposed reduction in projected fleet size. The Navy intends to prioritize more up-to-date vessels, retiring the carrier USS Truman two decades early and skipping the planned service life extension for the Ticonderoga-class cruisers. 

The US Navy is considering to build a 14-foot flood wall around the Washington Navy Yard, aiming to protect the around the Anacostia River from increasing sea levels. The wall would be 1.5 miles long, and will protect three dozen buildings. The wall proposal indicates that the climate change threat is high for Washington, while also challenging is the response to it.

Researchers from the organization started by philanthropist Paul Allen found the wreck of the first Japanese battleship sunk by the U.S. Navy during World War II. The 1914-built Hiei was a Japanese battlecruiser, one of the most heavily-armed vessels of its era, having eight 14-inch guns and armour up to nine inches thick. The vessel was crippled by a shell from the USS San Francisco on the 13th which disabled the steering gear. 

A US guided-missile cruiser and Navy resupply vessel have collided off the coast of Florida during a training exercise on February 5, according to the US Naval Institute (USNI). From the collision there were no casualties addressed, whereas only minor damage above the waterline to both ships was reported.

While conducting maritime security operations in the international waters of the Gulf of Aden, the guided-missile destroyer USS Chung-Hoon (DDG 93) interdicted a shipment of illicit narcotics aboard a stateless vessel, on January 24. Specifically, the vessel's board, search and seizure team discovered and seized 4.7 tonnes of hashish during a flag verification boarding.

Federal agents visited Littoral Combat Ship manufacturer Austal USA in its Mobile, Alabama, shipyard as part of an unspecified investigation involving the US Navy. Moreover, Austal was also under investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, regarding market updates on losses around the Independence-class LCS.

Mitsui O.S.K. Passenger Line, a part of Japan’s shipping major MOL, suspended the Master of the cruise ship Nippon Maru, after the vessel allided into a U.S. Navy fuel pier in Apra Harbor in the Port of Guam on December 30, 2018. Neither passengers, nor crewmembers were injured and there was no fuel spill from the collision.
