In an attempt to help ports reduce emissions to ensure cleaner air and contribute to the battle against climate change, an IMO training course is addressing this issue, highlighting the need to first quantify emissions and then identify measures to reduce port-related emissions in a cost-effective way.

Denmark's Ministry of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs published an Executive Order describing the training and qualification requirements for masters, officers and other personnel who are part of the guard on the bridge for ships operating in polar areas. The Executive Order will enter into force on 1 July 2018.

An active mariner who serves in a relevant position for one year in the previous 5 years using radar for navigation and collision avoidance purposes on ships equipped with radar, or has served as a qualified instructor for a US Coast Guard-approved radar course at least two times within the past 5 years, would not be required to complete a Coast Guard-approved radar refresher or re-certification course to renew his or her radar observer endorsement.

In its latest Safety Digest, UK MAIB describes a case of a fatal injury of a banksman who was acting as a banksman for the loading of an unaccompanied piece of freight that was being loaded by a tug-master. The crew member became trapped between the rear of the trailer and a vent housing. 

The South Korean government will designate five key shipbuilding centres on the country’s south coast as “industry crisis” zones eligible for economic support, according to the finance minister, Kim Dong-yeon. These areas are home to shipbuilding companies that have struggled with high unemployment in recent years.

Gambian President Adama Barrow visited the Port of Antwerp, where an agreement was signed between the Port and Gambia Ports Authority, on Thursday 24 May, involving training and consulting. Australian and New Zealand scientific research organisations have established the first formal collaboration aimed at promoting the safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation of their research ships. The group entitled `Research Vessels Of New Zealand and Australia’ has been led by New Zealand’s National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research.

In its MarTID survey initiative, the World Maritime University deals with maritime training, and especially training simulators. According to the report, the majority uses e-learning  as a training method, such as videos and simulators. Traditional classroom teaching, and simulation training are the most popular training tools for operators.

Mr. Carl Durow, Loss Prevention Manager at the London P&I Club, says that ECDIS is a top loss prevention concern for the coming years, explaining that further action is needed for a successful integration of ECDIS into fleets. ECDIS Type specific training and IMO generic course training should not stop at sea, Mr. Durow highlights, discussing also other loss prevention challenges.

The World Maritime University announced publication of the inaugural report from the historic MarTID (Maritime Training Insights Database) survey initiative, intended to study global maritime training practices and investments. The report showed that more operators increased their budget for crew training from 2016 to 2017.
