The US-based classification society ABS recently released advisory concerning autonomous functions in the maritime and the offshore field. In fact, the "ABS Advisory on Autonomous Functionality" goals to boost these functions and its major regulatory developments.

Awake.Al recently launched a platform for maritime logistics called " Smart Port as a Service". Specifically, through this web platform users will have the ability to interact and cooperate with other actors under real-time circumstances. 

During the 2020 SMART4SEA Athens Forum, John Southam, Loss Prevention Executive, The North of England P&I Association Limited, focused on the P&I perspective of autonomous ships and new technologies in general. As he explains, with the emergence of automation, new risks have been born as well, such as new definitions or new roles. Shipping should address these changes and adopt to the new situation.

During the 2020 SMART4SEA Forum, Ms. Elina, Regional Business Development Director V.P., American Club talked about cyber security, from a P&I perspective, while highlighted that the maritime industry increasingly depends on automation and new technologies to improve efficiency and reliability.

A recent UNCTAD study has been released examining the digitalization of ports and the risks they face by not adopting smart technologies. The study identifies the principal tensions and opportunities arising that are impacting the inevitable and ongoing digitalization process, particularly through the authors’ experience in the development and subsequent validation of the Port Collaborative Decision Making (PortCDM) concept.

According to a recent statement, ABS and P&O Maritime Logistics (POML) have agreed to a pioneering condition-based class (CBC) pilot project for the platform supply vessel (PSV), DMS Courageous. It is said that this three-phase agreement paves the way for a transformation from calendar-based to condition-based classification.

ABS along with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced that completed a landmark joint development project (JDP) upon HHI's Integrated Smart-ship solution (ISS) system. Namely, ABS identified the smart functions of the project and published the first Product Design Assessment (PDA), concerning project's data infra-structure.
