According to the latest report from Clarkson Research Services, LNG-fuelled vessel orders are approaching 30% of Gross Tonnage on order, representing a substantial part of shipping’s overall capacity when these vessels are delivered.

The EU recently published “Fit for 55” package recognizes that operationally proven and commercially available LNG and bioLNG provide a first step on the journey to shipping decarbonization, industry group SEA LNG said, welcoming the move. 

A greater understanding around the comparative pricing, vessel performance, and procurement of marine fuels is required to avoid costly mistakes as companies are planning their decarbonization pathway, the industry coalition SEA-LNG advised. 

Not for profit coalition SEA LNG opposed to a recent report by the World Bank which found that LNG cannot form a large proportion of the bunker fuel mix in 2050 due to its carbon intensity, in line with Paris Agreement and Initial IMO GHG Strategy. 

An update to the research study ‘Lifecycle GHG Emission Study on the use of LNG as Marine Fuel’ commissioned by SGMF and SEA-LNG in 2018 / 2019 has confirmed that GHG reductions of up to 23% are achievable from LNG as a marine fuel.

For every 10% of bio-LNG dropped in and blended with LNG as a marine fuel, a vessel can achieve two extra years’ compliance with the Annual Efficiency Ratio (AER) curve used to secure preferable funding under the Poseidon Principles, according to new analysis by SEA-LNG, the coalition for accelerating LNG as a marine fuel.
